Meeting 1

Saturday, 8th September 2018.

The first meeting enlightened me on what to expect from this course. The course will give me a clear sense on guidance on how to write chapter 1 through 3. Before attending this course, I was a little bit uncertain of the correct way to deal with dissertation. Hence, I am enthralled with the course because it will help me design an develop a research proposal appropriately.

The word 'research' has many definitions:
1. The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusion.
2. Finding out solution to a problem.
3. Must not be hearsay and assumption.
4. What are the suitable solution to a current problem.
5. Solve problem that has no known solution to anyone in the current context.
6. Not from a book, papers, news reports or professors.
7. Anything that can be learned by definition is not a research.
8. Re + search: to search again, to search for new facts or to modify the older ones.
We can look into chapter 5 of a research for suggestion for future research.
Why do we need research? To understand the world, solve the problems and improve existing solutions.

What is a research?

There are many definitions of research that will help understand the process:
*Research is a systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusion.
*Finding out solution to a problem
*Must not be hearsay and assumption
*What are the suitable solution to a current problem
*Solve problem that has no known solution by anyone in the current context
*Not from a book, papers, news, reports or professors.
*Anything that can be learned by definition is not a research
*We need to carry it out but we still need an input
*Re+search = to search again, to search for new facts or to modify the older ones
*Careful critical inquiry or examination in seeking facts or principles diligent investigation in order to ascertain something.
*Scientific ways of answering questions
*Find the best solution for a problem by systematic investigation

Why research?
*To understand the world
*To solve the problems
*To improve on an existing solutions

Steps of Conducting a Scientific Method

1. Identify a problem or area of interest
2. Generate research objectives and research questions
3. Formulate hypothesis (for quantitative approach)
4. Develop a the research plan
5. Collecting or analysing the data
6. Accept or reject the hypotheesis
7. Interpreting results and forming conclusions

Homework

Before the first class ends, we were assigned a homework which is to come up with a problem statement, construct research objectives and research questions and find two articles related to the topic.

TOPIC
The Effectiveness of Movie Subtitles in Vocabulary Learning Among Primary School EFL Learners in Malaysia

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Most of the research done in this area focuses on tertiary level learners or based on outside of Malaysia context. Therefore, this research is aiming to add a new point of view on this technique done in Malaysian context and young learners.
Another research also emphasized on different types of subtitles (intralingual subtitles, reversed subtitles, dual subtitles). This research aimed on exploring solely the effect of subtitles in students’ mother-tongue and its effect in helping students acquire vocabulary.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
  1. To investigate the effectiveness of movie subtitles for primary school students to acquire new vocabulary.
  2. To identify the factors contributing to the effectiveness of subtitled videos as a learning tool.
     3. To identify students’ perception on watching subtitled videos as a learning tool.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
     1. What is the effect of watching subtitled videos on primary school students’ vocabulary learning?
     2. What are the factors contributing to the effectiveness of subtitled videos as a learning tool?
     3. What is the students’ attitude towards watching subtitled videos as a learning tool?
